Answers to Your Questions About

Psychotherapy, Wellness Counseling, & More

  • What is the purpose or benefit of Psychotherapy and Wellness Counseling/life coaching? What distinguishes each other?
Psychotherapy can be a long-term approach for treating mental health issues (mental and emotional disorders) using psychological techniques designed to learn and encourage communication of conflicts via talk therapy by helping to improve insight into problems about how your thoughts, emotions, and moods may be affecting your behavior and relations with others. Sessions are strictly confidential. The chief goal is relief from moderate to severe symptoms, and bringing changes in behavior leading to improved social, and vocational functioning and personal growth. Treatment is achieved by talking with a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or another mental health provider. Clients would be individuals, couples, and families. Wellness counseling/Life Coaching can be a short-term approach that involves facilitating a paradigm shift from the pathology intervention model of mental health therapy. In the pathology intervention model (Psychotherapy), the emphasis can be on evaluating, diagnosing, and treating psychological problems. In Wellness counseling/Life Coaching, the focus is more on the prevention of mental, relational, physical, and emotional challenges with a more holistic intervention that entails setting specific goals and practices to be attained in a shorter time leading to positive change. Aside from the counseling aspect, this process can be a bit instructional or educational in being given assignments to enhance awareness and new skill sets. A client can expect to gain increased insight, support, confidence, and discipline through the integration of social, mental, physical, and spiritually-based techniques and practices that help maximize one’s quality of life. The objective is to help identify and discard poor mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual habits. These sessions are confidential, non-religious, and universal in their holistic self-care approach. Clients would be individuals and couples. Both psychotherapy and Wellness counseling/coaching are tools for improving overall personal self-development. They provide great opportunities to have a professional guide you through the most challenging obstacles in your life. Depending on what you want to focus on, you can engage in either service one at a time or both at the same time if you have the means.
